Missing Dorset Fisherman Named

 

The family of a man who was reported missing after a fishing trip off the Dorset coast has agreed to his name being released – as the Maritime and Coastguard Agency finish their extensive searches for the missing angler.

The angler – 32-year-old Somalian man Osman Sharif – whose inflatable boat was found along the shore at Chewton Bunny in Hampshire, is believed to have set out from Mudeford Quay near Christchurch in Dorset on Tuesday, 1 December 2009.

Dorset Police was alerted by Coastguard at 11.05pm as he was expected to return to his London home that evening. The missing man’s car was found in the public car park at Mudeford Quay.

An extensive air, sea and shoreline search for the missing man was co-ordinated by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, assisted by Dorset Police Officers and utilising the Dorset Police Helicopter.

The search was called off at 2.20pm today Wednesday, 2 December 2009 and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency handed over the responsibility of the missing person investigation to Dorset Police.

Inspector Tracey Baker, of Dorset Police’s County Division, said: “A police family liaison officer has been appointed and is supporting the family.

“We will continue to work with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the requirement for further searches will be dependent on any further information we may receive concerning the missing man or his whereabouts.”

Anyone with information about the missing man or his whereabouts should call Dorset Police in confidence on 01202 or 01305 22 22 22.
